Morgan's Harbour Hotel & Marina

Morgan's Harbour Hotel & Marina is the only hotel in Port Royal. Its 60 rooms and suites were recently remodeled so everything is nice and new. It's about 10 minutes from the airport and a block and a half from Port Royal.

The hotel has all the modern amenities you need: a great pool, two restaurants, outdoor dining and bar, casino, meeting rooms and a lots of parking. The hotel sits on the site of the old naval shipyard. In fact, the casino (Pirate's Gold) was at one time the Pitch House, dating back to the 18th Century.

The lobby has a nice paint job with lots of historic and piratical art - the staff is all dressed in period attire to lend an additional air of piracy to the place. All of the staff is extremely friendly and are willing to help out in any way they can.

The rooms are very nice. Lots of space to spread out and enjoy your stay. Rooms have coffee makers, phones, hair dryers and satellite TV. Some also have sinks, lofts and small living quarters. You can find something for any budget. Rooms start at just under $100 per night U.S.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as appetizers are served either in the restaurants or at the bar. For breakfast you have the choice of more American-type menu items (bacon, eggs, toast) or the Jamaican breakfast, which is usually some kind of native main course, Johnnycakes and plantains, bananas or potatoes. We always go with the Jamaican breakfast which includes the best coffee you will ever have and orange juice. You'll dine overlooking the harbor. A great way to start your day in Jamaica. An additional tip: If there's something you want that you don't see, ask a server. They'll be happy to help. They don't push stuff on you like they do in the states. So be bold and just ask. One of our favorites is the baked beans – simmered with green peppers and onions and whatnot. Service is decidedly island style, so slow down, relax and enjoy the view. It's OK not to feel rushed like we do in the states. Throw away your watch and enjoy life at a pace it was meant to move at!

The hotel doesn't have a beach per se, but it does have a nice sand area to sun and relax. It overlooks the marina. And yes, that's a cannon just laying in the sand underneath the brick facade. If you want some great beach time, the hotel will run you out to Lime Cay. But more on that later.

This photo of the beach chairs is shot from the bar. The restaurant is right behind me. The bar serves up domestic and imported beers, rum drinks and just about anything you can think of. Try the rum punch - yum! The bartenders are fabulous. Watch out for the rum drinks though. They use overproof rum here and your head will be swimming in no time if you don't adjust. Or just go with it and order several - you're a pirate on vacation! They also serve food here so if you're hungry, order a drink and get a bite to eat. The cheeseburgers are out of this world. Everything can be charged to your room.
